Why You Need To Switch To Organic Food

Trends come and trends go, but organic food is here to stay – it’s as simple as that. People from all four corners of the globe are jumping onto the healthy food bandwagon, and it’s about time you did too!

Why, you ask?

Because you deserve it, that’s why! Keep reading to find out more.

What is organic food?

Sure you’ve seen the word floating around on the TV and on many labels, but do you actually know what makes a food ‘organic’? It basically refers to the way in which food is grown by the farmer, whereby conventional methods of farming that involve chemical fertilizers, pesticides and additives are used. Instead, practices such as crop rotation, natural fertilizers or compost is used to feed plants and soils and control weeds. The aim is to reduce pollution in the environment and encourage water and soil conservation whilst preserving a plant’s nutrients, minerals and overall freshness. Also, organic food is free from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOS), which are essentially genetically engineered animals that are not found in nature, and are created in order to make them resistant to pesticides.

There is no ‘middle man’ involved in organic farming – you eat food plucked directly from the earth, in it’s natural and pure state, thereby avoiding the harsh chemicals, toxins and food additives that can build up and pollute your body. However, do not confuse ‘natural food’ with ‘organic food’ because for food to be organic, it has to be completely wholesome and free from any derivatives. Natural foods, on the other hand, might be devoid of one particular set of additives such as hormones or pesticides, but might contain another set of chemicals, thereby compromising their overall value. At the end of the day, organic farming is a much more rigorous process that has high standards that need to be met by farmers, therefore it has more nutritional value.

How does it benefit us?

Produce that is grown organically contains fewer chemicals such as pesticides, which include insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. These pesticides are used widely in traditional farming, and often remain in or on the food we consume. In contrast, organic produce is fresher because it is not loaded with preservatives to make it last longer, tastes better and contains more of its nutrients and minerals. For instance, research conducted in 2016 showed that organic milk contained 50% more omega-3 fatty acids than non-organic milk. Often, organic food is grown close to where it is sold on small farms micro-managed closely by farmers, thereby ensuring quality over quantity. Other benefits of organic food include its positive impact upon the environment around us, because it lessens water, air and soil pollution, reduces erosion of soil, conserves water, enhances soil fertility and consumes lesser energy. Moreover, eliminating the usage of pesticides is beneficial for the small animals, birds and people who work or live close to farms.

Animals raised organically are not grown by using growth hormones, or fed antibiotics or animal byproducts. This reduces the chances of procuring mad cow disease and ensures that the animals you are consuming were healthy and had the space to move around, thereby develop properly and fully. The usage of antibiotics in animal farming lends to the creation of strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. As a result, when an individual falls sick due to any of these strains, their bodies will become less receptive to antibiotic treatment.

Make the switch to organic foods one at a time, and you will see, feel and taste the difference yourself. Not only will your outlook towards life and yourself be much more positive and energetic, but you will feel more motivated to make an effort to improve your own life and of those around you. Organic food helps you consume food in the way nature intended it to be – fresh from the earth, and straight to your doorstep!
